Spiritually Blind and Deaf

The god of this world has blinded the minds of them which do not believe.

2 Corinthians 4:4

When a spacecraft returns from its orbital flight, there’s a blackout period when all communications are broken, caused by intense heat generated by the spacecraft’s reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. The Bible teaches that man is in a period of spiritual blackout. Spiritually, he is blind. The Bible says: “We grope for the wall like the blind” (Isaiah 59:10); And in 2 Corinthians 4:4, the Bible says: The god of this world has blinded the minds of them which do not believe.

Man is also deaf spiritually. The Bible says: “They have ears to hear, and hear not” (Ezekiel 12:2). Furthermore, the Lord Jesus said, “If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead” (Luke 16:31). Spiritually, humans are even “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1).

All of this means that the communication between God and man is broken. There is a wonderful world of joy, light, harmony, peace, and satisfaction to which millions of people know nothing about because they are spiritually blind and deaf. They search for serenity, they long for happiness, but they never quite seem to find it, something is always missing.

Many give up the search and surrender to pessimism. Often their despondency leads to frantic rounds of alcohol, drugs, distractions through entertainment, and the practice of immorality, completely ignoring God on their desperate search to find an escape from sin-blighted existence. But God is always there, speaking, beckoning and calling. He sends forth His message of love, but we must be on the right wavelength. We must be willing to receive His message and then to obey it. The Lord Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12).

Prayer

Merciful God, thank You that when I was lost in spiritual blindness and deafness, you came and spoke peace to my soul. In Christ's name. Amen.
